Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
If I were to live in any world other than this, I think Howl's and Sophy's would be it. Diana Wynne Jones is a master of fantasy and is able to draw the reader into her world skilfully and without a hitch. Although Sophy can be difficult and crotchety - particularly since she's been cursed to be an old woman instead of her girlish young self - she's not malicious, although she doesn't always make the best decisions.
The various doors opening onto different locations can be a little confusing, but I'm sure YA readers won't have any problem keeping everything straight in their heads - the tale whizzes from place to place, much like Sophy and Michael in the seven-league boots, and the action never ends.
