The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
While I didn't fall all over myself for this book the way I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway. Suzanne Collins' writing is solid but not stolid, engaging and drawing one into the story and working well at making one care about the characters.
I must admit I wasn't a huge fan of Katniss in the beginning, as she felt quite abrasive and, yes, selfish - as she admitted even to herself. I think that's when I started warming up to her.
I thoroughly enjoyed all the action throughout the book - it's wonderful to have a female protagonist who really doesn't want to be involved in a relationship - or even think about one - as opposed to someone wanting to ensnare the boy right from the get-go.
Collins' descriptions are sparse but she managed to build a whole, believable world for her characters that drew me in and captured my imagination.
